When Heaven Hovers Close: The Hummingbird at Our New Home
Last night, as the sun set to rest and and the world settled into that quiet night time peace, we were leaving the new house to go back home (old home) for the night. My husband opened my car door for me and as he shut the door and was heading to his driver's side door he stopped and looked at me with his eyes wide.....and there it was, we both saw it, a tiny hummingbird hovering just outside our front flower garden. We sat in awe as we both just sat and watched this beautiful creature dancing around OUR flowers. It felt like more than coincidence. In the middle of this new season, this fresh start in our new home, God sent a whisper of beauty with wings to remind us that He is with us.
I’ve always been fascinated with hummingbirds. There's something almost heavenly about them. They’re small and quiet, yet vibrant and full of color and life. They move fast, but beautifully carry peace in their presence. And as we stood there watching it hover and dart among the blooms, I couldn’t help but feel like God was reminding us: He’s here. He sees. He provides beauty in the waiting.
In Christian symbolism, the hummingbird often represents joy, hope, peace, and renewal. These little creatures travel thousands of miles on their migration journeys. They’re tiny, but strong....fragile, yet determined. That alone reminds me of how God works in our lives.
Buying and moving into our new home has been exciting, but it has also come with its fair share of uncertainties, exhaustion (both physically and emotionally), and LOTS of change. It has felt like we are rebuilding something sacred from the inside out. And yet, just like that hummingbird showed up when we weren't looking for it, God often meets us with quiet signs that we’re not alone—that even in new, unfamiliar spaces, His presence hovers close.
“The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness; He will quiet you by His love.” – Zephaniah 3:17
That’s what the hummingbird felt like to me, God’s gladness, God’s quiet love, God's peace. A small reminder that He is in the details, the transitions, and the stillness. And as we settle into this home over the next few weeks and months, I’m reminded that wherever we land, His grace goes before us.
So here’s to finding joy in unexpected places and unexpected times. To noticing the small things. To letting the hummingbirds of life remind us: we are held, we are seen, and we are deeply, deeply loved by a Heavenly Father who adores us.
With a grateful heart,
Crystal 🤍
